Colleyville, Texas December 30, 2016

Curbside leaf, Christmas Tree recycling continues January 7

Progressive Waste Solutions, the city’s garbage and recycling provider, offers curbside leaf recycling this fall.

Participants must simply place bagged leaves at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on a scheduled Saturday. There is no limit to how many bags can be collected; however, no other trash or organic waste can be accommodated on those days—and anything other than leaves will be left at the curb. Organic waste includes tree trimmings, grass clippings, and any yard waste other than leaves. Any bag is acceptable. Christmas trees will only be picked up for recycling on Jan. 7.

If you must have both trash and leaves to place at curbside, please ensure that trash bags and leaf bags are separated by no less than 10 feet AND that there is a sign on the leaf bags (one sign in a group of bags will suffice). The sign can be as simple as a page of notebook paper with the word “leaves” written on, then taped to one of the bags.

Residents can place bagged leaves for pick-up on the following Saturdays:

  • November 26
  • December 3
  • December 10
  • January 7 *The final day includes Christmas tree recycling

Progressive introduced the program last year and residents recycled more than 148 tons of leaves and Christmas trees. The City is able to provide this expanded service in partnership with Progressive at no additional cost to residents. The program was introduced as a way to alleviate the load of regular garbage routes and expand curbside recycling opportunities to provide better service to Colleyville residents.

The following report from www.Termlimits.org.
Note:  Thanks to Colleyville Resident David Medlin for bringing this to the attention of LNO.

In a divided and bitterly fought election year, there was one issue that had a 100% pass rate across the country on November 8th, 2016: term limits.

Over 40 different ballot measures across the country had a 100 percent pass rate for term limits. These votes were spread across the nation from California and Texas to New York. Hawaii even got in on the action.

These term limits ballot amendments covered school boards, mayors, city and county boards. Citizens also defeated initiatives that tried to weaken their current term limits.

Philip Blumel, president of U.S. Term Limits, said “the American people are tired of career politicians forgetting who they are supposed to be serving. This outstanding result for term limits is a real victory for the people”.

The 100 percent pass rate was unprecedented. In 2014 the pass rate was 97 percent, so bipartisan support for term limits is not unusual. Each referendum for term limits averaged 74 percent of the vote with a mean of 75.5 percent.

The support for term limits ranged from 88 percent in Crestwood, IL to 57 percent in Honolulu. The Honolulu vote successfully fought off a bill that would have weakened local term limits.

Americans continue to show a preference for citizen legislators over careerist politicians. These results demonstrate a growing belief that elected officials have lost touch with the people.

“It is no surprise, after this historic year for term limits, that action is already underway to slap term limits on Congress,” said Blumel.

The move puts them on an even-year election cycle to coincide with the November state and federal general elections. The term limits approved by voters would take effect with those elected in 2018.

Grapevine/Colleyville, Texas   January 14, 2017

Damian Merrick is not likely to forget this Friday the 13th as he was found guilty of multiple charges by a Tarrant County Jury.

However, the Star-Telegram referencing “Fox 4” as it’s source did not report the outcome of the Jury’s decision accurately.  As such, as anyone, Merrick has the right to at least an accurate report.  The Star-Telegram reported the outcome by combining all the charges, involving more than one individual, as if all the charges were entered as Guilty and as if all the Charges were based on a single individual.  Merrick was found Guilty on 1 count of Sexual Assault on one minor, while he was found Not Guilty of the Sexual Assault on another minor individual.

He was found Guilty of 3 counts of providing drugs and alcohol to minors.

The Star-Telegram reported;

“Merrick was accused of performing sex acts on her twice in March, once in a parking lot in the 2600 block of East Southlake Boulevard in Southlake and in a parking lot in the 800 block of West Royal Lane in Irving, the affidavits say.

In one instance, Merrick gave marijuana to the girl and other teens, and then forced the girl to have sex in a bathroom, according to the affidavits.”

In the latter incident, he was charged with providing drugs to a minor, however was found Not Guilty on the Sexual Assault charge by the Jury.

Merrick could face up to 20 years in prison, in prior discussion it was discovered that Merrick had agreed to plead Guilty if the State agreed to probation, however rejected a prison term of 15 years.

GRAPEVINE’S TOWER GALLERY HOSTS “WORKING HANDS” PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT JANUARY 20 – MARCH 12

Show to Feature Works by Rick Williams

GRAPEVINE, TEXAS (January 14, 2017) – Beginning January 20 through March 12, the Grapevine Tower Gallery, 636 S. Main St., will host the “Working Hands” Photography Exhibit. This visual photographic feast features the works of the immensely talented photographer, Rick Williams.

In “Working Hands,” Williams captures images of workers and work places in three diverse industries that constitute the three pillars of the Texas economy: ranching, oil and technology. These 40 finely detailed photographs contribute to an understanding of the workers who reshaped the landscape from boundless prairie to ranches, farms, towns and cities.

Williams’ images evoke a powerful sense of what it must feel like to engage in the work depicted, as well as the unique character each industry brings to the Texas landscape. In order to capture his subjects, Williams’ worked alongside laborers for months to observe their untold stories. This effort combined with his 40 years of experience all leads to a richly rewarding visual experience at Grapevine’s Tower Gallery.

Grapevine’s art community continues to expand with new and special engagement art exhibitions, recently opened galleries, the public art trail, fine art working studios and more. This exhibition was organized in partnership with Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Humanities Texas develops and supports diverse programs across the state, including lectures, oral history projects, teacher institutes, traveling exhibitions and documentary films. For more information about the projects, teacher institutes, traveling exhibitions and documentary films. For more information about the exhibit, please visit Humanities Texas online at www.humanitiestexas.org or call 512-440-1991.

The exhibit is free and will be open to the public Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.  The Tower Gallery is located in the Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau Headquarters at 636 S. The United Family Kicks Off Annual Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive in Dallas/Fort Worth, Jan.18

Leading up to the biggest football game of the year, Dallas/Fort Worth-area (DFW) Market Street stores will participate in the national Souper Bowl of Caring food drive. Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 18, all locations will accept food and monetary donations, which will directly benefit the North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Between Wednesday, Jan. 18, and Sunday, Feb. 5, guests can purchase pre-packaged bags of food for $8, or donate any monetary amount through a manual scan tag at check out. In a nationwide effort to eliminate hunger through the Souper Bowl of Caring campaign, all DFW store donations will be collected on behalf of the North Texas and Tarrant Area Food Banks. For every $1 donation, the North Texas Food Bank provides three meals and the Tarrant Area Food Bank serves five meals to hungry families throughout DFW.

“We’ve just passed a holiday that centers around great family meals so let’s take a moment to remember there are food-insecure families right here in our area in need of daily help,” said Mary Myers, communications and community relations manager for The United Family. “Souper Bowl of Caring provides a great opportunity for our guests to help make an impact on their communities by donating to local area food banks without having to go out of their way.”

Souper Bowl of Caring is a nationwide youth-led movement of community organizations, businesses and compassionate individuals joining together to tackle hunger and poverty in local communities. In 2016 the Souper Bowl of Caring campaign generated $10,493,661 in donations by the Big Game day, 100 percent of which went directly to community food banks, soup kitchens or other local charities.
