Walmart Greeter in Cypress, Texas knocked out cold by shopper

JUNE 23, 2019  Cypress, Texas

A 72-year-old greeter at a Walmart store in Texas says he was punched in the face and knocked unconscious – just for doing his job.

It happened last Friday at a Walmart location in Cypress, northwest of Houston, according to KTRK-TV.

The greeter, Mohinder Randhawa, told the station he just wanted to check that a customer had paid for a case of Gatorade being carried out of the store.

“He punched on my face with a closed right hand,” Randhawa told KTRK. “I fell down on the ground.

“My left upper lip was broken from here, blood started out, and inside also there was a cut about half an inch,” he continued.

Randhawa claims he never accused the suspect of stealing the drinks. He said cashiers sometimes miss an item while scanning a customer’s purchases and he just wanted to check.

He punched on my face with a closed right hand,” Randhawa told KTRK. “I fell down on the ground.

“My left upper lip was broken from here, blood started out, and inside also there was a cut about half an inch,” he continued.

The greeter, Mohinder Randhawa, told the station he just wanted to check that a customer had paid for a case of Gatorade being carried out of the store.

What to do if threatened;

So, a 72-year-old Walmart greeter was just trying to do his job…

When he saw a man leaving the store and asked the customer to see his receipt.

The customer didn’t take too kindly to this question.

42-year-old Craig Valentine started arguing with the Walmart greeter and then sucker punched him out cold.

The attacker was arrested and thankfully, the Walmart greeter was okay.

But, it just goes to show how unhinged so many people are these days.

In fact, just two days ago, I was staying in a semi-fancy hotel.

To get on the elevators to go to your room, you had to show your room key to get past security.

The guy behind me flipped out when security asked to see his key.

He started yelling at the security guard and getting up in his face.

I was quite impressed with how security remained calm and they did a good job of handling the situation.

But, with the selfish and “instant gratification” world we live in, people lose their crap at the slightest inconvenience.

This is why you have to know how to deal with one of these crazies.

First, you obviously try to deescalate the situation.

If the person starts to get too close to you, put your hands up and palms out.

You might be saying things such as “buddy, I don’t want any trouble.” Or, “please don’t come any closer to me.”

By having your hands out and palms up, it looks good like you’re trying to calm things for all of the knuckleheads who are videoing you (instead of helping you.)

But, another reason you want the hands out and palms up is that your hands are closer to the person in case you need to strike them in the face or throat, you don’t have to reach as far.

If they do try to punch you, you want to step into them and strike first.

By stepping into them, it’s harder for them to throw a punch because you’re in so close.

And once you start punching, don’t stop until the threat is down.

Never throw just one punch.

You want to be like the Energizer Bunny, punching repeatedly until the threat leaves you alone.

I certainly hope you never have to defend yourself…

But, it might be Walmart, the grocery store, a restaurant, etc., where some nutjob loses his cool.

So, at least you now know what to do.

And, as the old G.I. Joe cartoon says, “Knowing is half the battle.”

This self-defense training video, can help you with the other half.

Just a suggestion, it’s totally up to you.

Texas Ranks First in Youth Sports Stress according to fund raising company

$

Sports can be stressful. The play on the field, the coaches choice of the plays, and the lousy calls by the ref are all enough to make any sports parent pull their hair out in frustration.

Youth sports shouldn’t be stressful off the field as well. At least that’s what FlipGive believes.

FlipGive is a team-funding solution that has partnered with thousands of retailers and service providers across North America to eliminate the rigors of fundraising that parents and kids don’t like doing and simply don’t have time for. Instead of worrying about how they are going to afford uniforms, equipment, travel, and more, FlipGive allows young athletes and families to focus on the joy youth sports provides.

They’ve surveyed more than 600 American parents to find out what aspects of their kids’ sports participation stresses them out the most. Here are some of the interesting findings!

THE DUES ARE TOO DARNED HIGH
It’s no surprise that 74% of American parents believe youth sports to be too expensive. 38% say this was their main cause of stress. 22% of Americans point to team and league fees in particular as a major cause of stress.

 THE TIME COMMITMENT
Some 40% of parents point to the time commitment of youth sports as the biggest stress factor. For many, it involves nights and weekends, tons of travel, practices, games, etc. That’s a lot of hours for the kids and their parents.

 GEAR AND TRAVEL
Sports gear can come at a premium, especially in some sports like hockey (hope your kid’s not a goalie). 42% of parents say gear is the most expensive part of participation. Some 21% said the cost of travel to away games.

SOME SPORTS PARENTS ARE MORE STRESSED THAN OTHERS
Parents in these 10 states say their children’s sports involvement causes them the largest amount of stress.

 The FlipGive ‘Sports Stress’ Index
1. Texas- 100%
2. California- 97%
3. Georgia- 96%
4. Florida- 94%
5. New Mexico- 92%
6. Arkansas- 91%
7. Illinois- 86%
8. Oklahoma- 84%

Population Estimates Show Aging Across Race Groups Differs

North Dakota Only State to Get Younger

The nation as a whole continues to grow older with the median age increasing to 38.2 years in 2018, up from 37.2 years in 2010. The pace of this aging is different across race and ethnicity groups, according to new 2018 Population Estimates by demographic characteristics for the nation, states and counties, released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.

From 2010 to 2018, the U.S. population’s median age increased by 1.0 years. Amongst the different race groups:

  • The white alone-or-in-combination population increased by 1.0 years.
  • The black or African American alone-or-in-combination population grew by 1.4 years.
  • The American Indian and Alaska Native alone-or-in-combination population increased by 2.2 years.
  • The Asian alone-or-in-combination population increased by 1.7 years.
  • The Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone-or-in-combination population increased by 2.6 years.
  • The Hispanic (any race) population experienced an increase in median age of 2.2 years.

Midwest Counties Are Getting Younger

“The nation is aging — more than 4 out of every 5 counties were older in 2018 than in 2010. This aging is driven in large part by baby boomers crossing over the 65-year-old mark. Now, half of the U.S. population is over the age of 38.2,” said Luke Rogers, the Chief of the Population Estimates Branch at the Census Bureau. “Along with this general aging trend, we also see variation among race and ethnicity groups both in growth patterns and aging.” Rogers also noted that alone-or-in-combination groups overlap and individuals who identify as being two or more races are included in more than one of these race groups.

At the state level, North Dakota was the only state to see a decline in its median age, from 37.0 years in 2010 to 35.2 in 2018. Maine had the largest increase in median age this decade, going from 42.7 years in 2010 to 44.9 years in 2018, making it the state with the highest median age in the country. Utah had the lowest median age in 2018, at 31.0 years.

The share of the population age 65-and-older was 16.0 percent in 2018, growing by 3.2 percent (1,637,270) in the last year. The 65-and-older age group has increased 30.2 percent (12,159,974) since 2010. In contrast, during the same period, the under 18 population decreased by 1.1 percent, or a decline of 782,937 people.

Youngest and Oldest Counties

Of the nation’s 3,142 counties, 2,566 (81.7 percent) had a higher median age in 2018 than in 2010. During this period, 16.7 percent (525) had median age decreases and 1.6 percent (51) saw no change. In 2018, out of all counties, 56.2 percent (1,767) had a median age between 40 and 49 years. Among those counties with populations of 20,000 or more in 2017 and 2018, Sumter County, Florida, had the highest median age (67.8) and Madison County, Idaho, had the lowest median age (23.2).

A Changing Nation

As the nation continues to grow older, it is also changing by race and ethnicity. View our graphic on the age and race distribution from 2010 to 2018 to see how the nation has grown more diverse. References below to the race and ethnicity compositions are for race-alone-or-in-combination groups or Hispanic (any race) unless otherwise specified.

  • Among counties with a population of 20,000 or more in 2017 and 2018, Pierce County, Washington, had the fastest Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander population increase, growing by 4.9 percent (1,085) between 2017 and 2018.

The White Population

  • The white population remained the largest group in the nation at 78.9 percent (258,080,572), and had the largest numeric increase from 2017 to 2018 (1,055,588).
  • In 2018, the white population was greater than or equal to 50,000 in 906 (28.8 percent) counties and between 10,000 and 49,999 people in 1,390 (44.2 percent) of counties. In 2018, 48 (1.5 percent) counties had a white population that was less than 1,000 people.
  • Los Angeles County, California, had the largest white population, at 7.4 million in 2018. Maricopa County, Arizona had the largest increase in the white population between 2017 and 2018, growing by 60,749 (1.6 percent).
  • Among counties with a population of 20,000 or more in 2017 and 2018, Williams County, North Dakota, had the fastest growth in the white population at 5.3 percent (1,596) between 2017 and 2018.

For additional information about population changes by age and for each race or ethnic group, view our detailed tables. This is the last release of the population estimates for 2018. Previous estimates included nationalcountymetro areacity and town population estimates. These estimates are as of July 1, 2018, and therefore do not reflect the effects of Hurricane Florence in September 2018, Hurricane Michael in October 2018, and the California Wildfires. For information on how the national population is projected to change through 2060, view our previous release, Older People Projected to Outnumber Children for First Time in U.S. History

Unless otherwise specified, the statistics refer to the population who reported a race alone or in combination with one or more races. Censuses and surveys permit respondents to select more than one race; consequently, people may be one race or a combination of races. The detailed tables show statistics for the resident population by “race alone” and “race alone-or-in-combination.” The sum of the populations for the five “race alone-or-in-combination” groups adds to more than the total population because individuals may report more than one race. The federal government treats Hispanic origin and race as separate and distinct concepts. In surveys and censuses, separate questions are asked on Hispanic origin and race. The question on Hispanic origin asks respondents if they are of Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin.

Starting with the 2000 Census, the question on race asked respondents to report the race or races they consider themselves to be. Hispanics may be of any race. Responses of “some Other Race” from the 2010 Census are modified in these estimates. This results in differences between the population for specific race categories for the modified 2010 Census population versus those in the 2010 Census data.

Grapevine Police are searching for a Hispanic man targeting females primarily along Mustang Drive.

GRAPEVINE, Texas -July 12, 2019
Grapevine Police are searching for a Hispanic man targeting females primarily along Mustang Drive.

All of the victims were able to fight off the suspect, but in one case, a woman’s collarbone was broken in her struggle to escape.

Investigators are working at least five separate cases where a man exposed himself or physically grabbed women. The crimes happened from April 8, 2019 and July 9, 2019, primarily at complexes between the 2800 and 3000 blocks of Mustang Drive.

The man is described as Hispanic, in his early twenties, with short, curly black hair, a thin build, and between 5’3” and 5’8”.  Grapevine Police are working with a sketch artist and one victim to create a sketch of the suspect.  The sketch will be made public once it is complete.

Grapevine Police praise each victim for getting away and reporting the crimes.  Officers are actively patrolling the neighborhood and urge women to keep close watch of their surroundings, travel in pairs when possible, and call 911 immediately if they see anything suspicious.  Anyone with information on the suspect should call Criminal Investigations during business hours at: 817.410.3200 or 817.410.8127 after hours.

Grapevine Police are investigating the cause of a deadly crash that killed two people on the eastbound SH-114 service road at Main Street.

Just after 7pm on Friday, July 12, 2019, a gray Hyundai Elantra crashed into a black Mazda 3 that was stopped at a traffic light. The driver of the Mazda was able to get out, but two passengers had to be extricated from the vehicle by Grapevine Fire. All three people in the Mazda, along with the driver of the Hyundai, were transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Grapevine. The two passengers in the Mazda, 65-year-old Patricia Nealy and 62- year-old Craig Nealy of Odessa, died at the hospital. Both drivers were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses say the Hyundai was traveling at a high rate of speed. Investigators are looking into any additional factors that may have contributed to the crash. Two other vehicles were involved in the crash but nobody else was hurt.

The eastbound SH-114 service road was shut down for several hours from Mustang Drive to Main Street for the investigation and cleanup. No charges have been filed at this time.

Grapevine Police are searching for a Hispanic man targeting females primarily along Mustang Drive.  Surveillance video of the most recent assault may help police identify the suspect.  The video shows the suspect grabbing a victim and carrying her into a breezeway.

Speedway Children’rary-on-wheels made possible by $10,000 grant from Speedway Children’s Charities Texass Charity Executive Director Marissa Chaney, Assistant to the Executive Director Taylor Wilson, Board President and City of Roanoke Mayor Carl “Scooter” Gierisch, Trustee Mary Anne Bailey and BTFW students open the mobile library at a ribbon cutting ceremony.

FORT WORTH, Texas– Breakthrough Fort Worth (BTFW) at Fort Worth Country Day (FWCD) is speeding into reading with its new mobile library, an educational tool made possible by a $10,000 grant from Speedway Children’s Charities Texas.

The whimsical three-cabinet rolling library will better meet students’ needs by providing fully usable storage with book selections that affirm their diverse cultural and socioeconomic identities. It will be a dedicated resource to empower students with improved reading comprehension and development in literature/writing skills. The impact of the gift will be felt for years to come as the BTFW program benefits nearly 200 students in grades 7-12 each year.

“The students named our previous library ‘the liability,’” said Joe Breedlove, executive director of Breakthrough Fort Worth. “The Speedway Charity Mobile Library has created an excitement and a mad rush among our students to be the first one to check out a book. Students now use their free time and structured time to gather around the library. All of which has increased their affinity for reading and knowledge. Speedway Charities one again receives the ‘checkered flag’ for their impact on our Breakthrough community. We are so thankful.”

BTFW embarked on a reading program three years ago with a gift of 268 books collected by past Teaching Fellow Jaki Molina. Now that the books have a home, a special section of the mobile unit will be named “The Jacki Molina Selections” to honor her role in starting the library.

BTFW is celebrating 26 years of supporting underserved youth. A collaboration among FWCD, the Breakthrough Collaborative and the Fort Worth Independent School District, BTFW advances at-promise students on a six-year path to college by building academic confidence, developing character-driven leadership skills and providing education about the college admission process.

Since 1997, Speedway Children’s Charities Texas has distributed more than $10 million in funding to nonprofit organizations in Collin, Dallas, Denton and Tarrant Counties supporting children in need. The funds are raised through special events that take place throughout the year, most of which are geared around the three major race weeks at Texas Motor Speedway.
